The UK Border Agency (Previously The Border and Immigration Agency (BIA)) is responsible for securing the United Kingdom borders and controlling migration in the United Kingdom. They manage border control for the United Kingdom, enforcing immigration and customs regulations. We also consider applications for permission to enter or stay in the United Kingdom, citizenship and asylum.

Structure

The UK Border Agency is a shadow agency of the Home Office. Shadow status is a transitional period of operation which the UK Border Agency are undergoing before becoming a full executive agency. The Agency was formed in April 2008 to improve the United Kingdoms's security through stronger border protection whilst welcoming legitimate travellers and trade.

The Agency brings together the work previously carried out by the Border and Immigration Agency, Customs detection work at the border from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and UK Visa Services from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).
