Purpose
Sir Ian Magee has published his Review of Criminality Information, which looks at the way in which criminality information is shared between agencies both here and abroad. The Review focuses on the problems in information sharing and what needs to be done to better protect the public from harm.
Background
The world is increasingly interconnected - with better communications, affordable international travel and people settling in new countries and this presents an ever more challenging environment in which to tackle crime. Ian Magee consulted extensively and found that whilst the vast majority of people working in public protection agencies are doing an excellent job, they are often hampered by the systems available to them.
Conclusions
Magee concludes that in many areas information does not flow freely between organisations and this must be addressed. So a fresh approach to public protection is now needed– an approach that transcends organisations. The report states that there must be more links in the public protection network and organisations must become less risk averse to sharing information. Yet the right balance must be struck, safeguarding information and following the existing legal requirements around data protection. Ian Magees's recommendations represent a package of improvements to information flows. Some can be implemented quickly; others will take longer. But all are needed if improvements are to be achieved.
