Background
The project was developed by the Police of the City of London and commenced in London in 2004, April. Its purpose was to provide an advice to security officers, managers, and employees of public and private sector organisations on issues related to security, counter-terrorism and crime prevention. Due to its success in London, other police forces, communities and cities in the UK start to adopt its approach. Other countries such as the United States, Australia and Hong Kong have shown interest in this project.
Mission
Project’s primary mission is to provide working partnership between the police and members of the community through encouragement, engagement and facilitation. This is in order to detect, deter and counter terrorist activity and crime.
Aims
The principal aims of the project are to
- raise awareness of current terrorist and crime issues
- share and gather intelligence and information
- build and maintain effective working relationships
- seek solutions to defeating terrorism and crime
- maintain trust and confidence in the police and other authorities
- empower people to report suspicious activity and behaviour
Operational Framework
There are four main strands to the Framework
- Awareness Days: They introduce the concept and establish networks and relationships. They explain how public can recognise, respond and report activity and behaviour which seems suspicious.
- Online refresher module: This refresher module is easy-to-follow and informative. It has been developed in order to keep participants informed and engaged.
- Bridge Calls: These Bridge Calls keep individuals and groups informed and aware of issues or incidents that affect their area.
- Emergency Deployment: This includes additional procedures such as setting up cordons or high-visibility neighbourhood patrolling by Project Griffin registered personnel.
