Non-departmental public bodies (NDPBs) are public bodies that, although not part of government departments, carry out functions on behalf of sponsor departments, who fund them and ensure they are effective.
NDPBs are, however, independent of the department that sponsors them, and are considered to be 'at arm’s length'. This independence allows them to focus entirely on their own objectives and make unbiased recommendations and decisions.
