National Roads Telecommunications Services Project
From SR
Purpose
The National Roads Telecommunications Services (NRTS) Project ia a 10 year programme set up to establish a single national approach to the future of the communications network on England’s motorway and trunk network.
The NRTS project aimed to provide a service to carry data from roadside devices to traffic control centres. Initially
making use of the existing communication network and enabling it to be upgraded and expanded in order to provide a nationwide network capable of supporting our future needs.
The NRTS provides services across the Highways Agency's roadside telecommunication network. The network connects emergency telephones and other roadside devices to a number of regional control centres and operates and maintains the communications systems. These include:
- emergency telephones
- CCTV cameras
- variable message signs
All of which are connected to the 32 Police Control Offices serving the nation’s motorways.
