The National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA) provides and supports a range of Products and Services that underpin their commitment to improving policing priorities in the following areas:

  • Personal Development and HR
  • Systems and IT Services
  • Science and Forensics
  • Operational Policing Services
  • Programmes for Improvement and Research
  • Identification Resources and Databases.

They aim to bring this about by:

  • driving improvement and leading-edge practice where it matters, fostering self-improvement and helping to shape the future of policing.
  • delivering and developing critical essential services and infrastructure to support policing day-in and day-out.
  • providing accessible, responsive and joined-up solutions, enabling the police services to put more time into front line police work.

Reporting Hierarchy

The NPIA is a Non-departmental Public Body (NDPB) sponsored and funded by the Home Office, with its executive leadership drawn from the police service.

As a policing organisation the NPIA act as a central resource to ACPO and police forces, working with authorities and the Home Office to help improve the way policing works. They are led by a police officer, ensuring a strong connection between front line policing and the wide range of specialist expertise that the NPIA people offer.

The NPIA are owned and governed through the NPIA board. This board comprises representatives of ACPO, APA and Home Office, together with the Chair, the Chief Executive and two independent members. The board is responsible for agreeing the budget and setting the objectives for the NPIA.
