Jim Norton, Professor

Aged fifty five, Jim Norton is an independent director, policy adviser and public speaker. On a part-time basis, Jim is the Senior Policy Advisor - e-Business and e-Government, for the UK Institute of Directors (IoD). He is also an external member of the Board of the UK Parliament's Office of Science & Technology (POST) and council member of the Parliamentary IT Committee (PITCOM). Jim is Senior Independent Director of Zetex plc and a Non-Executive Director of F&C Capital & Income Trust plc. He is a Commissioner in the IPPR Commission on National Security in the 21st Century, with a special interest in critical national infrastructure and cyber-security issues. Jim is a Board Member and Trustee of the Foundation for Information Policy Research (FIPR), as well as a member of the ‘Electronic Communications Expert Advisory Panel’ for the Irish Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg). For the Irish Ministry of Communications, Energy & Natural Resources, Jim is a member of the Steering Group for the Irish National Broadband Scheme.
Previous Work
Prior to joining IoD, Jim led the Cabinet Office team that produced the PIU reports 'e-commerce@its.best.uk' and ‘Encryption & Law Enforcement’ for the UK Prime Minister in September 1999. He is a former Chief Executive of the DTI Radiocommunications Agency and has held senior positions in Cable & Wireless, Butler-Cox and British Telecom.
