Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary for England, Wales and Northern Ireland (HMIC) has, for over a century and a half, been charged with examining and improving the efficiency of the Police Service in England and Wales, (and latterly Northern Ireland), with the first HMIs appointed under the provisions of the County and Borough Police Act 1856.

Through the inspection of police organisations and functions, it is the aim of HMIC to promote efficiency and effectiveness of *agreed standards are achieved and maintained

  • good practice is spread
  • performance is improved.

Reporting Hierarchy & Structure

Her Majesty's Inspectors of Constabulary are appointed by the Crown on the recommendation of the Home Secretary and report to Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Constabulary (HMCIC), who is the Home Secretary's principal professional policing adviser. The HMCIC is independent both of the Home Office and of the Police Service.

Funding

The resources for HMIC are provided directly by Government through the Crime Reduction and Community Safety Group of the Home Office.
