Roles
The Environment Agency are the leading public body for protecting and improving the environment in England and Wales.
Services include:
- Protecting people from flood
- Working with industry to protect the environment and human health
- Concentrated effort on higher risk businesses - those that run potentially hazardous operations, or whose environmental policy is not sufficient
- Helping business use resources more efficiently
- Taking action against those who don not take their environmental responsibilities seriously
- Looking after wildlife
- Helping the people get the most out of their environment, including boaters and anglers.
- Working with farmers to build their role as guardians of the environment, tackling pollution unseen as well as adding to the beauty of the countryside.
- Helping to improve the quality of inner city areas and parks by restoring rivers and lakes.
- Influencing and working with Government, industry and local authorities to make the environment a priority.
Structure
Although working across England and Wales, the Environment Agency has regional offices working closely with other regional bodies to develop the right solutions for local environments. There are also area offices working with local authorities and others to tackle the immediate environmental issues.
The Environment Agency is divided into eight regions – Southern, Thames, South West, Midlands, Anglian, Wales, North West and North East – each of which has a Regional Office, run by a Regional Director. They support the area offices and help co-ordinate their activities.
Reporting Hierarchy
They are a Non-departmental Public Body (NDPBs) within the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs- The Environment Agency are independent, but work closely with Government to get the best possible results for the environment.
Funding
Around 60 per cent of funding comes from Government, and most of the rest comes from various charges schemes.
