DII Project
From SR
Aims
The aim of the DII Project is to enhance the Ministry of Defence’s operational effectiveness by providing better IT and communication systems. This will enable greater strategic and operational agility during times of crisis with an economy of effort. DII will supply all MoD land based sites within the UK, permanent overseas sites, all maritime platforms and Royal Marine Commando Units.
The DII Project will deliver a managed infrastructure service that will:
- Provide secure information and services, with protection from attack and misuse
- Provide guaranteed levels of availability and continuity of operational and business services
- Support the sharing of information with Allies and other external parties, including Other Government Departments
- Allow users to collaborate interactively
- Allow authorised users access from any appropriate location
- Be easy to use
- Provide a common look and feel across Defence
- Provide accurate and current directory information
- Be responsible to requests for new services
- Facilitate the electronic management of information and records needed to meet the Freedom of Information Act and the Governments targets on electronic public records
Partnerships
The provision of one information infrastructure is the responsibility of the DII Integrated Project Team's delivery partner, ATLAS, a consortium of companies comprising EDS as the prime contractor, with Fujitsu, General Dynamics, EADS and Logica as key sub-contractors. They will assume control of existing individual systems and progressively replace them with the new infrastructure. This will provide a standard, consistent platform for defence applications and a more effective environment for the sharing of information and transmission of messages.
DII (Future)
The new infrastructure, known as DII(Future) (DII(F)) is one of the largest information infrastructure programmes in Europe. It will provide a computing infrastructure and services that will enable sharing of information and collaborative working to a variety of groups and individuals including those that currently have limited or no connectivity. Ultimately, it will provide 300,000 user accounts on 150,000 terminals across 2,000 MoD sites worldwide.
Not only does the delivery of DII(F) capability represent a major output in its own right, it also plays a significant part in the delivery of, and as a catalyst for, the Defence Change Programme. DII(F) will be central to transforming the capability of the Armed Forces by providing Network Enabled Capability through a single network of information. It will extend into the operational arena, interface with battlespace systems and improve shared information between headquarters, battlefield support and the front line, allowing greater interoperability between the MoD and its allies.
DII(F), is being delivered in Increments to provide packages of work that are managerially and financially coherent. Increment 1 will provide DII(F) to around 70,000 desktops and 200,000 user accounts, focusing on Restricted and Secret DII(F) services in fixed locations. Increment 2 will deliver to more fixed locations, plus ‘Deployed’ services and services to the Above Secret environment. The service ranges geographically from the office environment in Whitehall to forward deployed headquarters located almost anywhere in the world. In service management terms, it ranges from normal office hours, to full 24/7 cover.
