Communications-Electronics Security Group (CESG) is the Information Assurance (IA) arm of GCHQ. CESG are the UK Government's National Technical Authority for IA, responsible for enabling secure and trusted knowledge sharing to help their customers achieve their business aims.

Roles

CESG state five key principles, essential for safe electronic transactions:

  • Confidentiality- keeping information private
  • Integrity - ensuring information has not been tampered with
  • Authentication - confirming the identity of the individual who undertook the transaction
  • Non-repudiation - the individual who undertook the transaction cannot subsequently deny it
  • Availability - ensuring information is available when required


Information Assurance is about meeting these requirements. CESG aims to protect and promote the vital interests of the UK by providing advice and assistance on the security of communications and electronic data. Their core clientele are HMG's many central governments and agencies and the Armed Forces
