Education
Brigadier Chapman joined the army in Sep 80 after sponsorship at Lancaster University. He was the only army student to achieve a first class honours degree in his year.
Army Career
He joined 2 PARA, which included participation as a platoon commander in the Falklands campaign. He stayed with 2 PARA until May 85 as the MMG Pl Comd where he completed his first NI tour as OC Forkhill. His next tour was at Warminster as an instructor on the Platoon Commander's Division. He then returned to 2 PARA as the Adjt. In 89-90 he served on exchange with the Canadian Airborne Regiment prior to attending ACSC 25 at Camberley in 1991.
On graduation he became COS 5 AB Bde. In 1994 he returned to 2 PARA as a company commander for a residential NI tour in Belfast. He was short toured in Aug 95 to become 2IC 1 PARA for a short 7 months before promotion to Lt Col in Mar 96. He served on the directing staff at both the Army Staff College Camberley and the Joint Services Command and Staff College. In Jul 98 he became SO1 Ops in HQNI prior to commanding 2 PARA from Aug 99-Dec 01. His tour as CO included a NIBAT tour, and the weapons collection mission (OP BESSEMER) in Macedonia. He was promoted to Col in Dec 01 and appointed COl MO2. Brig Chapman commanded 19 Mech Bde (on its transition to 19 Light Bde) from 2003 - 2005 prior to becoming the last COS NI with the end of OP BANNER.
