Defence & Security

BT are a global service provider helping multi-site organisations master the complexity of business communication. Their principal activities include networked IT services, local, national and international telecommunications services, and higher-value broadband and internet products and services. BT consists principally of four lines of business: BT Global Services, Openreach, BT Retail and BT Wholesale.

Government

BT have a long tradition of supporting and working with the key departments of government that have a responsibility for security and resilience with a particular focus on the critical national infrastructure (CNI). BT Global Defence & Security has a market facing unit that specialises in providing solutions into the National Security & Resilience (NS&R) market.

The UK MoD is BTs biggest client and they engage with them on many levels and through central and local organisations. Their flagship contract is the Defence Fixed Telecommunications Service (DFTS) a PFI deal providing outsourced managed wide area network services in the UK, Germany and Cyprus. They also support the MoD's people transformation programmes through the Defence Learning Portal (DLP) which provides a blended e-learning experience for individuals and teams.

BT Defence & Security

BT Defence & Security's NS&R team provide secure services to the three Security Services, SOCA, OSCT and CTC. Their long term relationships date back to the period when BT was the sole provider of telecommunications networks and as such they have developed their understanding of the Security Services requirements and assisted them in their transformation.

Other customers within the team’s portfolio include the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Cabinet Office and the Royal Household. Each of these has challenging security needs, especially in light of their important roles of providing citizens travel advice given the level of international unrest, extensive growth of the central government apparatus and the need to provide the utmost privacy. Other customers include National Air Traffic Services (NATS) whose challenge is to manage the safety of our skies.

Background

BT's customers are facing complex challenges. They operate in a changing environment where the nature of the threat has moved away from conflict between states and their armed forces, to countering global terrorism.

The scale and nature of activities has exceeded predicted levels. This inevitably leads to increased requirements for operational capability and accurate, timely information, which is managed securely and available to all who need it.

At the same time, the defence and security services also need to drive down costs, respond to sustainability targets, and address challenges around the tracking and disposal of assets.
